So we have arrived back in Kenya from Mauritius, except this time we are in the coastal town of Mombasa. I have been thinking of heaps of things to write in the blog about Mauritius. Excuse this blog if it is slightly morbid of lacks entertainment as I am homesick & feel like s***.
Upon arrival into Mauritius Alice & I could not keep the smiles off our faces. Unbeknowns to each other we both had our heads out the windows of the car on the way to club med inhaling the fresh fresh fresh air. A nice change from the asthma inducing Kenyan air.
When we walked into Club Med we nearly had tears running down our faces. It was beyond incredible, not just because we had been slumming it for the past 2 weeks, but because it is real life paradise. I kept thinking that the plane must have crashed, because we had arrived in heaven. The thing that nearly brought me to my knees was the shower....oh the shower. It was GIANT & had a detatchable hair-washing tap thing (okay, strange to be raving about a tap on my travel blog i know, but we had been using a bucket!!!).
After arriving at our room we hastily made our way to the main restaurant.....I shall try and describe it through words. Along one wall desert, along another wall fruits & breads (including chocolate bread...who would have thought?), another wall any beverage you like, one entire buffet for salads. In the room next to that a buffet dedicated to the theme of the night (e.g. asian, indian etc.), a corner of italian food and along one wall was all your fancy meats and fish's etc. Can you imagine the joy...after eating rice & spinach everynight for 2 weeks. When we sat down to enjoy our lovely meal a Club Med staff member asked to join us. I thought it a bit odd but presumed this was just how they roll in Mauritius, so we gracefully let him join us... Big mistake. His name was Olivier, I believe he was Jamaican or Mauritian & had a killer fro. Anywho he was not inclined towards using the English vernacular and made little effort to converse with us. When we spoke to him his eyes seemed to be glazed over and he just started blankly. We attempted to avoid him for the rest of the week (not very successfully).
I better stop narrating the entire trip because it will take forever. So I will give you a general run down. On the night we arrived we couldn't see the beach because it was too dark. But when we woke up we realised that if we walk out of the back door of our room in about 20 steps we would be on the white sand & sun lounge filled beaches looking over the crystal blue water. Throughout the course of the week we sunbaked...I am so freckly now & hating it! We went Kayaking, sailing on little catamarans, Al tried water skiing, and we went on the donut on the back of the speed boat (so much fun!). Oh PS. all of this was free. At night we were entertained at the bar with as many free cocktails as we liked, whilst the club med staff put on shows and danced in an attempt to make us all join in. Generally they were not very successful.
We made a few South African friends. One named Mandy who works at Club Med. She was filling us in on the perks of the job and said that its hard with such good food there- most people put on a bit of weight which they refer to as 'the club med spread'. The other two were South African guys, one of whom was from rural South Africa & worked hunting animals. But in his town when they go out the dance in a style known as Sokkie. He showed it to us a few times and it was so much fun. It was kind of like swing dancing. Pretty much being spun around constantly.
I can't really be bothered to write anymore. We have arrived at our hotel in Mombasa. We were thinking that it would be hard for it to live up to Club Med standards, but its done well in my book. The pools are big, there is a waterslide & a bar in the pool. The beach is also outside our door. The main negative in comparison to club med is that we have to pay for everything (except brekky & dinner), but we will make do. I haven't really got into the Mombasa thing yet as I'm overtired from the plane and homesick as I mentioned before.
I'll write again soon because there is internet at the hotel. Missing you all like crazy!!!
