The Footprints of Kieron and Nicole

Swellendam, South Africa

Back in time again guys too... SWELLENDAM AND MOSSEL BAY!

13/10/09

It wasn't raining when we woke up this morning!!! As such we decided to make the most of our time left in Swellendam and after buying a permit we set off on a walk into Marloth Nature Reserve.

After running the gauntlet of dogs and wild roaming horses we made our way through some beautiful indigenous forests to Duiwelsbus Waterfall. An enjoyable but challenging 1hr 30mins of walking later and we were back at the Adventure Lodge, where we ran into a troop of Baboons casually strolling past our shed!!! A few pictures later (including 1 x-rated shot!) and we were back in the lodge awaiting the arrival of the Baz Bus, which incredibly was running on time!

A short bus ride later and we arrive in Mossel Bay and were shown to our cabin on the Santos Express, which is a train parked literally ON THE BEACH! After dumping our things we went for a lovely walk along the beach, with the warm Indian Ocean lapping at our feet.

After a quick pit stop at the shops we enjoyed a delicious African meal at the Santos Restaurant, Nicole enjoyed a dish called Bobotie with rice and I had lamb and limeflower (though this was more like limeflower with lamb!)

We retired to our rooms and fell asleep listening to the waves on the beach yards from our room!

We awoke to blazing sunshine and after a quick breakfast (free!) we set of on another beach walk. Unfortunately things did not go so smoothly today and I managed to destroy a toe nail after losing a fight with a hidden rock! Whoops! An endless hobble later and we were back at the hostel where Nicole saved the day and bravely cleaned my wound, (which she says was gross!) the medical kit coming in handy sooner than either of us had hoped!

Another quick shop for supplies interrupted what turned into an epic wait for the Baz bus, which rolled into Mossel Bay over 2hrs late! This did mean that the hostel receptionists were kept entertained with my berating of the unfortunate call centre staff!!!

When the bus did arrive we jumped on for a quick trip to George where we were met by our shuttle to Oudtshoorn, driven by the fabulous Gavin.

to be continued...
